"Chuck"
Chuck (Protege #0142), otherwise known as Chuckles, is a 12 week old boy puppy, Australian Shepherd/Cattle Dog mix.
He loves people and dogs, and finds the cat very interesting but is also respectful, and he really wishes the adult dogs would play with him.
Chuck is learning to be potty trained but still needs some help in that department, but he can hold it all night in his kennel. He is not very fond of being in his kennel and will cry at first, but settles down eventually and will sleep the whole night.
Chuck is a typical puppy, he is shy at first in new situations and with new people, but quickly opens up and is a friendly and happy boy. He likes to play with toys and balls and will sometimes bring a ball back to you, but he is so easily distracted right now sometimes he forgets.
Chuck is current on shots and will be neutered before being adopted. He looks like he is going to be a big boy when he grows up with lots of fluffy fur, but right now he is a fat little fuzzball. He's being fostered in Iowa City, Iowa. If you'd like to meet Chuck, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com.

"Ava"
This is Ava (Protege #0141). Ava is NOT the model dog. But she's pretty close, and for the right family, she will be the world's best pet! Ava is reactive in public situations; on her leash around people and dogs in public she will bark and lunge. We are working on this behavior, but we don't know how possible it's going to be to train her to greet people and dogs quietly and with good manners, so her ideal home is with a family who doesn't plan to have her out and about much. We know there are tons of people who pretty much have their pets at home, so we are really hoping for a nice situation for her, because ...
At home, Ava is just about the most perfect dog you could ever hope for. She is loving, happy, enthusiastic. She loves to play with other dogs (here are a couple of videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3ZebF7IEyE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iEBqfpVXRY
-- all dogs she's met when unrestrained are her friends. She is sporty, loves to play with toys and chase balls. She can entertain herself with a favorite toy. She and her foster brother Sherman have the most fun playing together with a racquetball, particularly tossing it down the basement steps and then chasing after it. Ava is smart and loves the people in her family. She doesn't take long at all to warm up to new people, but just needs to be watched at first due to her reactivity; it's great if new people can offer her treats! She is perfectly quiet when crated and goes happily into her crate. She loves to go for car rides, has a wonderful recall, and does a nice sit.
Ava is so friendly, happy, and well-mannered at home that we are very much hoping to find a situation with a family who is okay with a house pet, but who also understands the need to be cautious about meetings with people and dogs, particularly when she is leashed. Around the home, you would never ever guess that she has a problem or a care in the world. She loves to sit with you on the couch, to sleep with you in bed if allowed (but if not, she doesn't fuss about it).
Ava is a pretty red merle female with a lot of white, approximately 2 years old and around 30 lbs. She is likely the result of a merle-to-merle breeding, but has no hearing difficulties, and though she has microphthalmia (her eyes, particularly her right, are smaller than normal), we have not seen any evidence at all of vision problems. She may be a little sensitive to bright light because of this, combined with her white/pink facial coloring. She is spayed and up-to-date on all vaccinations, and is being fostered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Ava is just the perfect pet for some family: we need to find that family. If you think it might be yours, please contact Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com; we hope you will consider this pretty little girl for your next dog!

"Cheri"
 |
Cheri is a 1-2 year old red-tri Aussie. She is on the small side, standing about 17 inches tall, with a thick coat, docked tail. She could use some grooming to remove mats. She was found as a stray in rural Iowa and taken to the Safe Haven Shelter in Williamsburg.
Protege evaluated her, and she is a very sweet girl, she loves, loves, loves human attention in any way possible. Once you start petting her, she flops over on her back for belly rubs & she can't get enough belly rubs! You can touch her anywhere, it's all good with her!
We would have taken Cheri into our rescue program but she does have 1 flaw, she does NOT get along with other dogs. She can coexist with a non-reactive dog peacefully in the kennel run next to her, but if she's in their presence outside of the kennel she'd really like to start a fight, even with a submissive dog.
Cheri will need a home that can keep her from getting into trouble with other dogs, she will need to be managed on walks or in public places with other dogs. If you are interested in additional information please contact the Safe Haven Shelter directly via their Web site (linked here) or by phone at (319) 325-0150, and they can tell you more about her.

"Jasper"
 |
Jasper (Protege #0140) is a very handsome blue merle Australian Shepherd. He was picked up as a stray and we figure he is about 2 years old; he is now at Camp Bow Wow in Hiawatha, Iowa, where he is being fostered for Protege until he finds his new forever home. Jasper is a playful, happy guy, he gets along well with other dogs and loves to spend time with people– he is a WONDERFUL DOG. He has been with kids and doesn't seem to mind them at all. Jasper knows several basic obedience commands already (has a snappy sit and down) and is happy to show them to you for a few treats! He knows what a brush is and enjoys being brushed.
Jasper has shown a tendency to chase cats, so we are recommending that his new home be cat-free. He rides great in a car. Jasper weighs approximately 50 pounds, is neutered, up to date on all vaccinations, and is on flea/tick and heartworm preventatives. For more information on adopting Jasper, please contact Jayne McQuillen, mcjayne@yahoo.com.

"Parker"
 |
We'd like you to meet handsome Parker (#0139)! Parker is just as happy as his photo suggests! He came into rescue as a stray; who can imagine how a dog like this comes to be an unclaimed stray? He was very smelly and matted, and very thin. Now, after a bath and a good grooming (well, still working on some of those matts), and two hefty meals a day, he's become such a handsome and charming boy!
Parker is around 2 1/2 years old, a blue merle with very nice copper, who should probably weigh around 50-55 lbs. He has settled right into living inside, though is still figuring out stairs, and coming in the back door is a quirky challenge for him sometimes. Once in, though, he couldn't be a nicer house dog. Parker is polite, he doesn't jump on people, nor does he get on furniture. He is not a barker so far, he rides and waits great in the car. He is completely housebroken -- not even one accident since he's arrived. Parker will go willingly into his crate now for a treat, but he'd just as soon not be there and has been trustworthy when left uncrated. He does not get into trouble and does not chew on stuff. He seems pretty interested in what's on the counter, but so far hasn't done more than lift his nose up to smell. Parker is not your typical velcro Aussie in that he won't be attached to your legs wherever you go, although he will generally be in the same room. He's also okay going off to lay by himself and contemplate the world now and then.
Parker does love to be outdoors and has the thick coat so he can be comfortable on our pretty cold winter days. He and his little foster brother run around and play in our larged fenced yard. He gets along great with both dogs in his foster home, and only now, after a little over a week, is starting to come out of his shell and play with them. He and his little foster brother play a lot inside now, so I'm sure Parker would enjoy having a doggy companion. Though he'd also thrive as an only dog getting all the love and training.
Parker is going to need some time and patience as he settles into a new home. He's a little reluctant to try new things; I suspect he was probably an outdoor dog in his previous life; hence his hesitancy over stairs and coming in through the door. But he is proud to learn stuff and after the first few moments in a "lesson," when he is a little worried about what's happening, he finally decides that treat makes it worthwhile.
Parker is a bouncy boy when he's outside -- he is very exhuberant and will run back and forth past you, giving a big bounce when he gets near! This can make him tricky to catch if he's not sure what you're expecting of him, so it will be important for his new owners to keep him leashed when he is outdoors for awhile until he gets accustomed to new people and new home. Otherwise, you may end up playing tag with him just when you are in a rush to leave for an appointment.
Here are a few little videos of Parker:

Parker is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and on heartworm and flea preventative. He is being fostered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. If you'd like to know more or are interested in applying to adopt him, contact Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com.

"Meg Lo Mein"
Meg Lo Mein (Protege #0136) is a 6-7 month old blue merle Aussie mix. She is small, we suspect she will not top 30 lbs when she's an adult. She has a bobbed tail and partially blue/brown eyes. Her coat is silky soft but is shorter than the average Aussie's coat. Meg is spayed and up to date on shots.
Aside from her physical cuteness,, we can not stress enough what an absolute SWEETHEART she is! She is SO easy to live with and soaks up training like a sponge. She loves to play tug and play with toys. She is very well behaved with other dogs, she currently lives with a huge German Shepherd and two Jack Russell Terriers. She especially likes playing with the shepherd and they make a very funny pair.
Meg spent some time with a cat and while curious, behaved very politely around the cat. Meg has spent time at doggie day care and also did very well with all the dogs there, and the staff raved about how absolutely charming Meg is! She is housebroken, crate trained and since she's still a pup, she is crated when her foster mom is at work. She also gets to sleep loose at night as she's proven to be very trustworthy.
Meg's dang near close to being the perfect puppy, and we're sad that she's still seeking a permanent home. Unfortunately pictures just don't do her justice and her foster mom is not good at getting better pictures of her.
When Meg came into foster care she was definitely shy, she had not been exposed to much, so everything was new to her. She has since been exposed to lots of stuff: flyball practice, doggie day care, etc., were all great fun for her. While she's still not apt to jump all over strangers and mob them with kisses, she is happy to meet new people and with a little encouragement is happy to cuddle up to new people and be friends.
Meg would be happiest in a home where her family will continue her training and enjoy a dog who loves to learn new things. She rides well in cars and is good for grooming, baths, and nail trims. She would do well in a home with other dogs, cats, and gentle kids. She's being fostered in Coralville.
If you're interested in Megs or have questions, please contact Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com.

"Ginny"
 |
Please meet our stunning young lady Ginny (Protege #138 ). Ginny is one of the prettiest dogs you'll ever see, a beautiful red merle coat with very little white (a bit on her chest and her paws) and a good bit of copper. Plus, unexpected eyes: lovely light blue! They really stand out against her red coat. She is a smaller female at about 30 lbs., has been spayed, is up-to-date on all her vaccinations, and is on heartworm preventative. She is 1-1/2 years old (birthday 02/06/08).
Ginny was rescued from a breeder's farm. The breeder is no longer able to afford breeding with the economy so bad. He had planned to keep this little girl as a breeding female (and it looks like she's probably had one litter), but ended up putting her on the radio to give away; he said he had someone interested who wanted her to use for breeding, but then a lady from rescue talked him into letting her take Ginny. Lucky girl!
Ginny had obviously never been socialized at all; she was deathly scared of pretty much everything except other dogs: all noises, general stuff (parked cars! clock chimes!), and definitely did not know how to walk on a leash (she would just lie down). She had to be carried into the vet's office, as she was too scared to walk. She'd clearly never encountered stairsteps before, and had probably never been inside, as coming through the doorway from outside was a particular problem. Despite all that fear, Ginny has never hinted that might bite; she was scared to be caught, but then very tolerant and sweet.
Since she's been in foster care, she is really coming out of her shell and is becoming a lovely happy bouncy girl. She just about turns herself inside out wiggling when you come home in her happiness to see you! She listens well, is learning what it is to be a dog, and is doing great. She is quite shy yet, so will need some one-on-one time to continue to improve. We've had Ginny in a fairly quiet foster home to help her get used to life, so she hasn't been around kids or cats, but she gets along great with the dogs in the house, and she was wonderful with the dogs in her interim placement.
As she gains confidence, she's also finding some small ways to get into trouble exploring her new world: she's enjoying a bit of counter-surfing and collaborated with her foster brother (who's too short for that sort of thing) to capture and completely eat a wooden spoon that had been used for mixing something tasty! Ginny is lovely and quiet in a crate and hasn't had any accidents in the house. She has been for several walks now, and is doing much better on a leash; she can even walk past a parked car without collapsing and crawling past on her belly! Unfortunately, now it's gotten too cold to be out walking as much, so she'll still need some work on this, but she seems to get past her fears pretty easily when she's exposed to things and encouraged.
Ginny enjoys snuggling and giving kisses and loves to be petted! She likes to run in the snow in the backyard with her foster borther and sister, and comes quite nicely when called. Ginny is ready to find a forever home where she can settle in and continue to learn about life and all the things that make it wonderful for dogs! Could you provide a home where Ginny can blossom? If you might be interested in learning more about Ginny, or in adopting her, please contact Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com. Ginny is being fostered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

"Chaz"
 |
Meet Chaz (#0132), a healthy 4-1/2 year old, neutered shiney dark red-tri male Aussie. He is such a dark red that people will think he's black at first glance, it is gorgeous! He is 38 pounds and current on vaccinations, heartworm and flea preventative. His right ear flops backward giving him a unique adorable look. He came to us from a breeder who is getting out of breeding.
Let me tell you, someone has to take him fast or he's going to get adopted by me and then my husband will kick me out for sure. Chaz loves my kids, he thinks he's a lapdog and curls up gently on the smallest lap. He will play fetch for you, he will race through the snow or lie next to you giving kisses and snuggling on a cold night. He is fine with cats (doesn't even seem to notice them), other dogs (male and female) and kids. My youngest is six and I will say that Chaz has enough energy that a toddler might get knocked over, but he's not rambunctious and I think is caring enough to not be obnoxious intentionally. I would have him in my house with any age child but it would be up to you to meet him and decide for your household.
He is perfectly housebroken and gets your attention to go out and barks to come in. He loves to play fetch with anything that is thrown for him (tennis ball, basketball, stuffed toys). He can be very energetic when he is outside playing and he really likes to be outside. He is not a big barker; he will however tell you when he wants to play. He does a nice crisp alert bark when someone approaches house but I haven't heard him bark excessively at any time. He has not chewed up anything lying around our house yet (which is a big deal to us) but I will say that if you leave food unattended and near the ground -- he will claim it.
Chaz does okay on car rides, he gets a little nervous and drools a little bit, he has gotten much better over the last 3 weeks since he goes places all the time with his foster family. He knows sit and come fairly well. We are working on down and not pulling on the leash when on walks. He is kennel trained, but does fine when left in the house. He is extremely food motivated (and will take treats gently from anyone who offers) so if you need a good candidate for training--obedience or agility--I think you've found your dog; he is fast, smart, attentive, really wants to please and never misses a chance for a treat. He likes to give hugs (putting his feet on your waist) and then looks at you with those brown eyes like you are the best person in the world.
Here are a couple of short videos of Chaz in action:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPrswBi6Vfg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVFKByA1UKs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I72TLoBiVFI
I think this boy simply must go to someone who loves a cuddler, wants a true Velcro Aussie around, and wants someone to DO things with (classes or tricks or exercise). Chaz needs a home where he will have a nice fenced yard to run in and lots of love and attention given to him. He is ready to be your friend -- could Chaz be in your future? Get him in time for spring and enjoy!
Chaz is being fostered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. If you are interested in Chaz and would like to know more, contact Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com.

"Easton"
 |
Easton (Protege #0131) is a neutered black-bi male Austrailian Shepard who was born on 6/7/2008. Easton is up to date on his rabies, distemper, bordetella, is heartworm negative and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative.
Easton is one happy guy! He is living in a foster home with three dogs and two cats and he can think of nothing better than playing around with his doggy pals! Even the crabby cats seem to like this easy going boy! Easton is housebroken and recently learned the sit command. Easton is sweet as pie and warms up to new people slowly but surely. He loves a good neck scratch and now that he knows what toys are he loves to pick them up and carry them around in his mouth, sometimes shaking his head from right to left showing off to everyone, "Hey look what I've got!"
Easton rides well in the car and thinks it is great when he gets to stick his nose out the window for a good sniff! He has very good recall. He gets to come to the farm almost daily with his dog pals, and he loves to run yet manges to stay close and out of trouble. Easton has lots of energy and when I arrive home to greet him he vibrates with excitement, but does not jump up.
Easton had a rough start in life when his owner/breeder had trouble keeping up with the number of dogs in her care. Easton has spent his whole life in the company of other dogs and seems most comfortable when he was a doggy pal around. He would make a great companion in a family with another dog.
Easton is being fostered in Marion, Iowa. If you'd like to know more about Easton, or might be interested in adding him to your home, contact Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com.

"Spencer"
 |
Spencer (Protege #0130) is a 1 year old small Border Collie mix. He is neutered, up to date on all vaccinations, and is currently on heartworm and flea preventatives. Spencer was an owner surrender to a shelter in western Iowa. He was not well cared for by his owner, and as a result is very underweight right now, weighing in at only 19 pounds when he should weigh around 25.
Spencer was at the shelter for several months, and was a shelter favorite, baffling the shelter volunteers about why such a great little dog had not yet been adopted. Spencer is now in foster care awaiting his forever home. He is a splendid little dog! He is getting along well with his new housemates (4 resident dogs and 2 resident cats). Spencer is very playful with the other dogs, and goes to doggie daycare with his foster mom several times a week, where he really enjoys being around the other dogs and the staff.
Spencer is house trained and crate trained. He has not had any accidents in his foster home. He travels well in the car, and in fact just went on a trip with his foster mom to a seminar in Nebraska, where he did very well on the car ride, and in the hotel as well.
Spencer is wonderfully friendly and outgoing with others. He is happy for attention from anyone, and loves to give kisses to those who give him some love! He is not an overly active dog - he loves his play time, but he also loves to spend plenty of his time draped across your lap, or laying next to you on the couch will all four paws in the air waiting for a belly rub. Spencer is going to make someone an affectionate, fun, and easy going companion.
During his most recent vet visit, the vet detected that he has a heart murmur. This means that Spencer will not be a flyball or agility dog, but the condition should not affect his daily life. He will however make a great companion, and even possibly a competition obedience star for you! This little guy is in the top running for my favorite foster dog ever! Please contact Jayne McQuillen at mcjayne@yahoo.com for more information or to meet Spencer; but be warned once you see this sweet little face in person and are on the receiving end of a few Spencer kisses he will steal your heart away!

"Fletcher"
|
Meet the handsome Fletcher (Protege #0124) who is a black-tri Aussie, just over 2 years old. Fletcher is a fairly easy going boy and weighs about 45 pounds. He was found as a stray and turned into our rescue so we don’t have any background history on him.
Fletcher is completely housebroken and he is also crate trained. He is crated during the day while his foster mom is at work. He is quiet in his crate unless he hears you, as he wants to be out where the fun is. His foster mom lets him have the run of the house with his foster brother when she leaves for a few hours at a time. There haven’t been any issues at all with him having the run of the house.
Fletcher loves to be near his person. Whether you are in the kitchen cooking, sitting at your computer, sitting on the sofa watching TV or even sleeping in bed Fletcher will be right there by your side. He does not get up on the furniture but if given the chance he is more than happy to jump up on the bed and cuddle with you at night.
Fletcher loves to run outside with his foster brother and along the fence line with the neighbor dogs. When he first came into rescue he didn’t show any interest in dog toys but has since learned to play with them; then again how could he not, especially with his foster brother constantly hitting him in the head or shoving toys in his face. He enjoys chasing after tennis balls outside. He enjoys playing tug with his foster brother and even playing with stuffed squeaky toys.
Here are a couple of videos of Mr Fletcher:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqbq-JzDXmY

Fletcher is neutered, up to date on all vaccinations and is on heartworm and flea preventative. He is waiting for his forever home and may be just the guy for you! Contact Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com with questions or for additional information.
