"Nellie"
Are you ready for a whole lot of blue merle lovin'? Nellie (#0096) is 6-8 months old, good with kids, good with other dogs, and good with strangers. She enjoys chasing cats, but if they are brave and stand their ground, she does give up, so clearly her goal isn't to hurt them. She is truly curious about everything in the world around her. Nellie would be a natural candidate for agility. She has long legs, is very agile and can jump with ease, and has boundless energy. She is learning to play fetch and really enjoys her chew toys as well.

Nellie is not one of those super-focused Aussies, but she is eager to please and learned relatively quickly that she'll get more attention by sitting nicely than by jumping on people. Her strongest features are her cuddle-factor (she thinks she's a lapdog) and her agile, active, playful energy and sweetness. The challenge for her new owner will be keeping up with this highly active and quick-moving pup!

If you're interested in a buddy who will stay by your side and keep up with your active lifestyle, and you're willing to invest some time and patience in basic obedience training, you will have a wonderful dog in Nellie!

Nellie is a young blue merle female with white trim, one blue eye and one brown eye. She's going to be on bigger side as Aussie females go (I imagine 21-22" at shoulder as adult). She's healthy, great hearing, comes when called and keen eyesight. Her movement seems correct and she should be sound for lifelong activities given what we can see right now. She uses her voice to let you know when she needs to come inside or wants to talk to the neighbor dogs, but she isn't one of those nonstop barkers. Nellie is spayed and up to date on all vaccinations, on heartworm and flea preventative. She is mostly housebroken, but still has some puppy accidents. She stays in a crate without complaining.

Overall, she is your typical high energy, very trainable, healthy Aussie puppy with a sound temperament. Grab her soon--she's waiting to give you kisses! Families with toddlers would need to supervise their interaction due to her energy level and innocent bouncing. Contact Jayne if you are intereted in Nellie.

"Streak"
Streak (#0094)is a lovely, one year old split-faced male Border Collie who came to Protege from a shelter after being turned in by his farmer owner for not "gripping" (or biting) the sheep when he herded them. Not only is this a crazy reason for giving up a dog, but I can't really believe it since his herding instinct with my dogs is pretty intense and he's right there at their heels, gripping away. He only does that, though, with the dogs that permit him to act that way, and to the dominant male and the doberman girls -- nope, he's learned to respect their space!

Streak has really come out of his shell after the first few weeks in the home. This is both good and shows a couple of training issues that we are working on. Since he's gained confidence, he's really intense with staring in the patio door when he's outside with the other dogs and then rushing at them whenever another goes through the door. This is a bit of a challenge since the instinct is so strong, but I am working on teaching another alternative which is to look at me (earning cookies for doing so) and let the others go through first, then wait until I give him an OKAY to come through the door. Right now I have to leash him to manage this, but he is learning and I feel it will get better with consistent work.

We are also working on leash skills and he is getting much better with these. He is now walking well with me in the house even when other dogs are out, earning lots and lots of cookies for automatically checking in with me and staying "in touch" with where I am going. He's got SIT down well, too, and is getting better with COME, which is always easy unless of course there is another dog to chase! We are working on DOWN and STAY.

Streak does not have any unmonitored time inside yet because we are still working on housetraining. He's getting better about doing his business right away when he's outside (especially if there are no dogs that he can see inside) but he's not quite got the idea yet of holding it after he's been inside for a while. I am treating him right now as a puppy -- no unmonitored time for even a minute, outside right away as soon as there are any signs of sniffing, circling or general anxiousness, and tethering him to me so he stays close. He'll get it figured out. He's a border collie, after all!!

He continues to be great in his crate which is in a quiet area of the house. If it was in the main room and he could see other dogs running around nearby, I think he'd bark quite a lot, wanting to join them. But in the quiet area, he's great and has never made a mess in his crate even for extended periods of time.

I think Streak will do fine in most home settings although he might be too herdy for very small children. Homes without a fenced yard will need to be committed to walking him on leash until his recall is reliable despite things to chase. And he would love obedience or agility training since he truly enjoys our training sessions since he's learned that he can earn tasty tidbits. After he's had a chance for adequate exercise, he does like to snuggle and seeks out attention, showing off his lovely temperament. Streak really is as sweet as his is cute!

Streak has been neutered, is heartworm negative and up to date on vaccinations and on heartworm medication. He is ready to go to an approved adopter who will continue his education and share the love that he is just waiting to give to his forever home. Contact Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com with questions or for more information. Streak is being fostered in the Quad Cities.

"Sterling"
We'd like you to meet our "full-figured boy," Sterling (#0097)! Sterling was almost without doubt named for his striking "sterling silver" blue merle coat -- it is beautiful, full, thick, and soft. Sterling is a handsome 6-year-old male with a happy and friendly personality. He was turned into the shelter by his owner, an older lady who also has a Chow Chow that kept attacking poor Sterling. The owner decided she would give up the dog who was more adoptable.

As you can see, Sterling is a whole lot on the heavy side; he weighed in at 77 lbs. when he arrived at his temporary caregiver's home (and should probably weigh about 45-50 lbs.) and has been put on a strict diet. This is totally easy; Sterling should never have been allowed to get so heavy; apparently he had been raised on table scraps and it took him a few days to figure out that kibble was edible. He is not at all desperate for food and very much loves to go for nice long walks. His foster mom has never had a dog who is better walking on leash than Sterling. She started out using a 6' lead, but soon found she was just holding all that lead in her hand, so graduated to a 2' street leash. Sterling walks right by her side and doesn't pull at all. He would probably walk fine without a leash, as he really just wants to be with his human -- though we're sure he'd still enjoy taking off after a squirrel or rabbit!

Sterling comes when called, knows sit, is completely housebroken, will stay in a crate though would prefer not to and is completely dependable uncrated. He has not tried to get on furniture, though is starting to jump up on the bed in the morning when the alarm goes off, just to make sure mom wakes up okay. He is good with all dogs he's met, very friendly with all people and loves to be petted, and is fine with kids. He's sweet and quiet -- though does bark to get your attention if he wants something (to come inside, to ask you NOT to leave him alone, etc.); but he's not persistent about it. Here is a short video of Sterling enjoying a nice spring day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw4YNgpliEw

After just a day or two, Sterling was able to jump up into the back of the car and he loves to go for car rides. He was very reluctant about stairs at first, but now does them fine, though he still won't venture to basement or second floor unless encouraged; this is hard for him, because he does want to follow you. We're sure he'll get better at steps, too, as he loses weight and gains confidence and mobility.

Sterling will be a very fun companion, and we think he'll have more energy as he drops pounds -- he is already showing a bit more spunk after his 2-1/2 week diet. He'd enjoy being a jogging companion, though would probably have to work up to long distances as his weight drops.

Sterling is neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, on heartworm and flea preventatives, and was recently professionally groomed. He is ready to join you and your family and be a happy and loyal companion. Contact Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com with questions or if interested.

"Casey"
Casey, a sweet blue merle Aussie mix, is approximately 2 years old. She loves to be with her people and stays with the person she is walking with off-leash. She gets along great with other dogs and cats. She is very active and loves to wrestle, play, and run full speed. She is crate-trained, but would need to be shown the ropes before being fully trusted in a new house uncrated. Casey came to the shelter as a stray so unfortunately we have no previous history about her. The vet said he can feel a scar from a surgery, so is fairly certain she has been spayed. She is heartworm negative and up to date on shots. She is eager to learn and prefers to be with someone more than anything else. Casey is in the shelter in Vinton; if you think Casey might be the dog for you, please contact Julie at JulieHavran@aol.com.

"Tater"
Meet Tater (#0098)! Tater is a six month old Cattle Dog with a great personality. His owners surrendered him to the shelter because they couldn't have dogs at their apartment. Tater sat at the shelter for two months before we found him and decided to help this cute little guy find a home. Although he has not had any training, Tater is learning amazingly fast and is adjusting to life in a real home quickly. Tater does not get on furniture, is crate trained and housebroken. He has a nice personality and is a happy little guy. He goes into his crate happily and doesn't even care whether he gets a treat or not.

Tater has already learned sit and is working on down and stay. He gets along with most dogs, but prefers people. He LOVES everyone he meets, especially kids. He is up to date on all of his shots and is neutered. Tater is learning his name and is learning to come when called; just the other day, he slipped his collar outside, and even though his foster mom completely freaked out, Tater stayed calm and just walked up the sidewalk to the front door.

He has learned to enjoy car rides and now jumps into the car of his own accord. Tater spends his days smiling and playing. He has never chewed on anything inappropriate around the house, but he loves to play with toys. Still, his all-time favorite thing is having humans pet him. Tater sleeps through the night and has adjusted nicely to his foster mom's routine. All-in-all Tater is a smart, fun dog who just needs a home with a family tol love him!

If you might be interested in learning more about Tater, email Jayne.

"Rusty"
I am a placement volunteer for Bay County Animal Control in Panama City, FL, a straight shot down highway 231 (50 miles). We have a gorgeous, big, young Redbone who needs placement asap. He is about two years old and already neutered (adoption fee is half for S/N and to Senior Citizens), and that would be $40 to the person adopting him.

His name is Rusty. He has a superb nose, which got him into trouble, because he gets into the trash, which can be modified. Our canine evaluator really likes him. I have visited with him. He's a joy, and would be great for rough and tumble romps with children who won't be daunted by his size. He's pretty chubby right now. He of course, needs a fenced yard.

The shelter no. is (850)767-3333. Leave a message. They're closed Sunday and Monday.
