The focus of Callie Cats is to increase public awareness of the plight of stray and abandoned animals by providing educational materials at community events and through the mail. We work to stem overpopulation by offering instruction and the loan of humane traps for the purpose of spay-neuter and release of feral cats. Funds permitting, we try to provide financial spay-neuter aide in certain situations. We also offer guidance and referrals to those needing assistance. We are totally committed to the ongoing care of our shelter animals and the pursuit of homes for the adoptable ones.

Your donations have enabled us to provide quality care for many, many animals. On their behalf we thank you and hope for your ongoing support and faith in us as we go forward with our work.

Sammy, pictured here on the right, is a feral cat we rescued last Fall. He is sweet-natured, gentle, and interacts extremely well with other cats at his foster residence. Unfortunately, Sammy is terrified of humans and therefore is unadoptable.

You could say that we were "doggone" busy over the past couple of months. In fact, every time we turned around there seemed to be a dog crossing our path and needing our help. First, there was the tiny Pomeranian that just appeared one day in the alley behind the home of one of our volunteers. Many large, aggressive dogs freely roam the inner city alleys; this was certainly a dangerous place for the little Pom. Fortunately, he was wearing an identification tag and could be reunited with his owner before any harm befell him.

Then, there was Sophie, the terrier mix. We were returning from a shopping excursion on a cold, damp February afternoon when we spotted her lyig on the median strip of a busy intersection in the heart of town. Pulling over to access the situation, we watched her for just a moment as she craned her nick and looked pleadingly at each passerby as if to ask, "Can you help me?" But, no one stopped; they just ignored her. We exited the car and managed to secure her with the only thing we had - a detachable purse strap. Sophie was in terrible condition. Not only was she grungy and badly matted, she was also pregnant! Lucky for her we came along when we did. Sophie, who is approximately 4 years old, is now safely sheltered with us.

Hungry, filthy and hopeless, this picture of Sophie was taken on the day we rescued her from the streets. Her pathetic, woebegone expression was just heartbreaking

After a trip to the veterinarian, a shampoo, some good nourishing food and a few weeks of love, Sophie has become a happy, confident girl. Just look at that smile!

Now all that Sophie needs is for someone to be her "Guardian Angel."
Could you be that special somone?

On yet another outing, we were at a traffic light on a heavily traveled 4-lane thoroughfare when we noticed a dog on the opposite side of the street. She appeared confused and began weaving aimlessly in and out of cars that were stopped waiting for the light to change. We held our breath as she suddenly turned and bolted across the road just as traffic began to move. We made a frantic U-turn and finally caught up with her. We managed to secure her and coaxed her into the car. Her long fur was a mess; massive mats dangled from her ears, legs and tummy. However, she wasn't skinny as are most strays. She wore a collar, but had no ID tags. Our vet checked her over and was able to determine that she had already been spayed. It was apparent that this dog had once been somebody's pet. She looked to be Sheltie/Cocker mix and was around 5 years old. We researched "lost and found" ads and watched for notices to be posted in the area where we had rescued her, but we were unsuccessful in finding her owner. We can only imagine how she ended up on the streets.

We are pleased to say that this story has a happy ending. We heard about a gentleman named John whose elderly dog had recently passed away. John wanted another dog in his life and our little lady was just perfect. An adoption was arranged. John has named his new companion "Shanna".
