"Clint"
On May 2, we took in three puppies that appeared to be either pure-bred Goldens or Golden/Lab mixes. They appear to have been whelped in mid-February. The darker one in the photos is a male who has already been placed. We have named the remaining two--one of each sex--Clint and Lisa. The pups are playful and not at all timid. May 6 Update: Lisa has been placed, but Clint is still available!

"Missy"
I am currently a foster mom for Puppy Mill Rescue, and am fostering Missy, an 11.5 lb, 5 year old, special needs dachshund. Missy is a sweet girl that gets along well with other dogs (even big ones), cats and kids (although she would do best in a home with older children due to her special needs).
Missy suffered a back injury during her previous life as a breeder at a puppy mill. Her injury was never repaired. She has regained use of her back end through steroids and physical therapy. Although she does get around very well, Missy could benefit from the use of a
wheelchair to help her with rough terrain and slippery floors. The rescue organization is looking into providing Missy with a chair. She does have good bladder control, but needs to go out often (about every 3- 4 hours) and still needs some overall work on housetraining as she has occasional accidents.
Missy has had extensive dental work, and had most of her molars removed. She can eat dry dog food very well, as long as the size is small. She may require more dental work in the future. She was lucky and the infection she had in her mouth from neglect and malnutrition did not damage any of the bones in her jaw. She may have some scar tissue in her sinuses due to a possible untreated sinus infection in her past. Missy also suffers from dry skin, which is controlable with medicated shampoos.
Missy loves to be held, and cuddled. She almost instantly falls asleep when you pick her up. She is slightly overwieght, and we are working on dropping a few ounces which may help her back issues. She would benefit from someone willing to provide her with some minor physical therapy, water therapy, or massage to keep her back legs in good working order and to help improve her mobility.
What Missy needs most is someone who will love and understand her. She suffered horribly at the hands of the puppy millers, but has turned out to be an adorable, cuddly, love bug. Anyone interested in adopting Missy should go to the Puppy Mill Rescue web site for an
application and information (puppymillrescue.com).
Missy is currently located in Rhode Island, but adoptions will be considered
nationwide.

"Noah"
Noah is a young male who seems to be a mix of Golden Retriever and Yellow Lab. He was found running loose in Baton Rouge with a collar that was too tight for him and a broken chain. Noah is a big, beautiful boy with a wide head, who probably weighs 100 lbs. Just because he was a stray, we suspected that he was likely to be heartworm-positive, and we were right. He also came in with whipworms. Now he is even protected from HW with a ProHeart6 shot.

"Lucas"
|
Lucas is a Golden male about 3 years old who comes to us from Lafayette. He is a gorgeous pale blonde with a big head, who is up-to-date on his shots, neutered on July 10th, 2002 and recently treated for heartworms. Right now he is cautious around new people and things. In the last home where he was living, he would fetch and stay. We have not yet tested him with children or cats. Lucas will be ready to go anywhere once we can get him to eat better after his HW treatment.
August 6 Update: Lucas is really eating well now, and is starting to play with the other dogs, showing no aggression whatsoever. This morning when Jim was getting him and couple of his foster sister and brothers inside, he would not come: he was busy trying to catch his shadow in the light! Finally after getting the other guys inside, Jim turned off the light, called him, and Lucas came running! He really is going to make someone a great companion.
October 17, 2002 Update: Lucas still needs conscientious crate-training when home alone: he showed some destructiveness one day when he escaped his crate and killed some small pet turtles.

"Chewy"
Chewy is a 15-month-old owner-turn-in from the Houma area. Reportedly the dog he lived with used to chew on him! At first Chewy was rather timid, but now he is full of playful energy. Chewy is a good-looking young boy with a nose that turns up slightly when he smiles. He has especially gorgeous white teeth.

"Caramel"
Caramel lived with a family in Poydras, but they were disappointed by her failure to retrieve or even to chase game into the water. She came to us in early February, 2003. She had not been spayed, and her entire life has been spent outside. When Leigh picked her up, she wrote, "What a gorgeous, gorgeous dog! If it weren't for Shine, I'd adopt her myself. Not housebroken, but that can be dealt with. I can hardly believe the former owners were going to put her in a shelter. She needs a very, very special person who will love her and take care of her."
Old Gold got Caramel spayed and moved her to foster care. She is still under a year old, and her foster dad calls her "really a sweet girl." Caramel takes a chewable tablet called Proin50 for urinary incontinence.

"Buster"
|
Buster is a blond Husky/Golden mix with a relatively short coat and a gay tail (that just means it curls up like those of the sled dogs), now two years old, who was rescued on Dec. 10th, 2001 from a life of neglect. He had been tied by a 6' electrical cord in a Gretna backyard without shelter, in the company of an equally ignored Doberman. Buster had received none of his shots or neutering, and was heartworm-positive. Despite this miserable neglect, he loves people.
Buster is a very gentle, loving boy with a small compact build, and low shedding, which is perfect for inside. He is wonderful with kids, and even gets on the trampoline with his trainer's two boys while they are jumping. He is funny in that he lies on the trampoline instead of the ground--that's the Husky in him.
Buster has been neutered and has recuperated from heartworm treatment. He is very confident and prances when he walks. He is doing well in basic obedience and is a very quick learner. He is no longer the digger he once was; he'd rather stay clean.
Buster needs a house with no cats, and no other male dogs, but females are ok. If your household falls into that category, you would be very lucky to add Buster to your family.

"Emily"
|
Emily is a quiet and lovable Beagle. A snuggle bunny, really. Adopters
of her siblings have given me glowing reports about their being easy to
house train and really great pets. A beautiful little face goes with the
package and soulful eyes that will soon have you doing her bidding.
Beagles are superb companions and family pets. This little girl is
playful without overdoing it. She seems mature beyond her years. Call
Gail for information 423-727-8900 or email me at jbelfi@preferred.com
